Is a credit history required to get a store credit card?
August 13, 2010 · Posted in Qualify For Credit
I don’t have any credit history because I just started working. I would like to start building my credit history and I thought a store credit card would be easier to get than a regular credit card. So I was wondering, do I need to have past credit history to get a regular Walmart Credit Card (not their Discover Card because I probably wouldn’t qualify). If you have any idea, please help. Thanks.

A Walmart store credit card should be possible for you to get. I recommend, since you have no credit history, to apply for their in-store credit card and not their Visa card. You will almost definitely be accepted for that card.
That being said, if you want to get a real credit card instead of a department store card, you could probably get a Capital One credit card. They have a credit card for no-history and it starts with a $300 balance, which can be increased to 1k in 7 months if you keep up with your payments. Also, it carries a surprisingly low interest rate for being a no-history card. This was the first card I got when I wanted to start my credit history.
Good luck to whatever works for you!
Because of new laws that took effect February 2010, you must to be 21 or you will need a co-signer.
Many credit cards are still pretty easy to get. If you are hesitating about applying for a straight Visa, MC, AMEX, etc… , just go with the ones tied in with stores, such as the Amazon Visa, Sears Master Card, or the aforementioned Walmart.

I don’t think so. Be careful and don’t open up too many credit accounts though. That hurts your credit.
I would try what the other commenter is suggesting and apply for a Walmart card, not the Visa one though. If you are not successful wait 2-3 months before trying again at another store. Stores are generally easier to obtain cards from versus credit card companies. Depending on your clothes shopping preferences you might try Banana Republic or Gap. Once you get a card, put $100-$300 on the card and then pay it off, and some months leave a small balance, pay the interest, and then pay it off a couple of months later. The main point is to keep using it monthly so it shows activity and that you are making payments, and not just minimums.
You will still most likely need some kind of credit score in order to get a store credit card. Store cards are easier to get than regular credit cards. I would suggest getting a secure credit card where you give the credit card company a deposit in the amount you would like your credit limit to be set at. Start out with something like $500, use the card on a regular basis, pay it off each month, and in some instances leave a small balance on the card. This is a great way to get your credit moving in the right direction, and there is no risk for the credit card company because they have your $500 as security.
Getting a store card is the first step in building credit. You can buy it from a without any credit history. You can easily apply for a card and purchase the item on the card.
If the store has good prices, a lot of stuff you like, and discounts that you’ll use, then having the store card is a good idea.
For getting store card you need to build your credit card history, then you can get store card easily.
Store-branded credit cards have never gotten much respect — often for good reason. The sky-high interest rates and short grace periods that often accompany the cards don’t do consumers any favors. And because they’re often touted as a quick way to save 10 percent or 15 percent on a purchase, people rack them up quickly, to the detriment of their credit scores.
Because they’re a hard inquiry on your credit file, which can cost you about 30 points on your score, taking out these cards can drive down your score pretty significantly.
They say that no credit is worse than bad credit; however, I rarely see this as the case. Most of the time you will be given a small dollar amount of credit to test out whether or not you will be a good candidate for larger dollars amounts of credit.

It seems like an in-store credit card would be the easiest way to get started, but I’ve known people who haven’t had credit get cards. They just start out with low limits. If you have a job, they like you to use their cards.
It’s hot where I live in Central Oregon. In fact, the thermometer tipped the upper end of 98 last week. While it may not seem hot compared to Phoenix, Death Valley, or dozens of other places.
I always avoid to have bad credit because i want a great credit score.
As I have mentioned on your previous post, Gas and retail credit cards are easier to get than bank cards when you have no credit history. After obtaining one, you can now apply for a secured major credit card.

Store cards aren’t too hard to get, but you are limited in where you can use them. It’s just as easy to get a starter card from someone like Capital One or through your bank in most cases.
In the title it says “iTunes or Mac App Store”. That’s wrong, I was getting frustrated today when I found out you need a credit card to download ANY app in the Mac App Store.
Apply for a credit card. Shop around and only apply for a card if you can meet the lender’s requirements. Responsible use (spending within your budget and paying your bill on time) will help you build a good credit history.
You can get a store credit card without credit history as many of the stores do not need to check your credit history to issue the card.
i am not really sure about it but you can try. maybe if you already have a credit card, you don’t need to get another. its difficult to maintain credit cards…lol!
I suggest you avoid their Visa card and since you have no credit history, to apply for their in-store credit card. Also, the store cards are kind of easy to get, but you can use them in limited places but they are still very good. Good luck!

Getting a store card is the major step in building credit. You may easily purchase it without any credit history. Further, you may also apply easily for a card and purchase the item on the card basis.

Of course you can, otherwise the teenagers could not get a credit history … It is better to start with a credit card of any shop
A store card is also a cerdit card. The only difference is that it is commissioned by the store that promotes the card. Because it is a credit card, it definitely needs a credit score of the applicant. Try getting one and you will know whether you are approved or not in 60 seconds or less.
One effective way to deal with decline in application (this has already appeared in the other comments) is by deciding what you need. The store card becomes your tool to acquire what you need, at least for the moment. Limit your applications, too, because so many inquiries and applications will hurt your credit rating. Lastly, regularly pay a portion of your credit on a timely manner.
