Free Annual Credit Report
A new law took effect on April 2, 2010 which requires the three credit reporting bureaus to provide consumers with one free credit report every twelve months. All three reports are available at AnnualCreditReport.com, or 877-322-8228. This source is not a business that requires you to try their products in order to get a free report. You do NOT need to provide a credit card, just some personal information (name, phone, address & SS#) so they can make sure they are giving the report to the right person. This is the ONLY authorized source for the no-strings-attached free credit report that is legally entitled to everyone.
When you contact AnnualCreditReport.com, you are given a choice of which report(s) you would like; the TransUnion credit report, the Equifax credit report or the Experian credit report. If you want more than one, you will need to complete a separate form for each one. There may be different information in each of them, so choosing all three provides you with a complete outlook of your credit status. However, if you think there are no errors on any of your reports and you would rather use the free reports to monitor for identity theft, you could request one report now and the other two later in the year. This would allow you to keep an eye on your credit throughout the year.
You should be aware that these no-cost credit reports do not include your actual credit score. These are the detailed reports that contain all the information which determines your credit score so you can get a general idea of your score by analyzing this information. If you want your exact score, you can still take advantage of a trial offer from one of the commercial score providers like FreeScore.com or FreeCreditReport.com. Most of the advertised free credit score sources will give you your score when you sign up for a trial period of their services. You can get your score and simply cancel the service within the stated time period.
