What can we do to protect ourselves from identity theft?

A relative stayed at our home for a few days and they had full access to our home when we were at work. They could have easily gotten all of our personal and financial information during this time. Recently, I found out that they have stolen from other relatives and committed identity theft in the past! Is there any way to prevent accounts from being opened or loans being made in our name?

My ex left the country 2 weeks ago and he left my personal stuff (by that I mean papers with my personal information) lying all over the place. I didn’t even know he had any of my personal stuff because I thought I had collected everything. I am so afraid of identity theft that I’m thinking of getting identity theft insurance, but I am so confused. Please help.

I have two identity theft accounts and they have become collection accounts. How can I remove them?

I have two identity theft accounts. Someone used my social security number to apply for SBC and Direct TV. I never received bills from them. When I found out about these accounts, they already showed as collection on my credit report. These are having a negative effect on my credit. I called up the collection agency for SBC and told them this is not my account but they are not willing to remove them. I called the Federal Trade Commission and reported these but they said they couldn’t do anything about this. I have tried to consult free legal aides but they didn’t reply! How can I remove these identity theft accounts?
